Haret Hreik Development Center

What We Do

The Haret Hreik area, located in the southern suburb of Beirut, is one of the most vulnerable areas in Lebanon. Around 50,000 Syrian refugees and 50,000 Lebanese citizens live in this region.

Amel Association International has been operating its center in Haret Hreik since 2009, responding to the refugee crisis and supporting marginalized Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian host communities. The center provides integrated services in health, protection, education, vocational training and food security.

Every month, thousands of individuals benefit from the center’s integrated humanitarian, social and development services.

Education

Since 2014, the center has hosted non formal education activities for around 300 Syrian and Lebanese children through a sponsorship program.

Children attend tutoring in English, French and mathematics three times per week. Recreational activities, psychosocial support and community events are also organized.

Food Security

The center includes a rooftop vegetable garden and offers professional food production training, including cooking classes.

More than 200 refugees and Lebanese community members benefit from this component. Hot meals, fruits and vegetables are distributed weekly to vulnerable families living near the center.

Health

The first floor hosts a primary health care unit offering general, pediatric, gynecological and obstetric consultations, essential medicines, vitamins, laboratory tests and ultrasounds.

The unit receives up to 500 patients per month. More than half are women and children, and around 75 percent are Syrian refugees.

Community Impact

The Haret Hreik Development Center offers a comprehensive and inclusive program that responds to the needs of refugees and host communities. Its approach combines humanitarian assistance with empowerment, skills development, health care, education and social cohesion.

The center also organizes awareness sessions on family planning, proper use of medicines, health promotion and conflict management. Medical social assistants identify the needs of beneficiaries and refer them to hospitals or other Amel centers when specialized care is required.
