The People’s Health Movement (PHM), a global network of grassroots health activists, civil society organizations, and academic institutions spanning around 70 countries, proudly announces the release of Global Health Watch 7 (GHW7)—the world’s leading alternative health report. Published in partnership with Daraja Press, the report is available for free download in both English and Spanish.
A Global Health Polycrisis
As GHW7 documents, the world is facing a deepening existential “polycrisis” of health—an interwoven set of multiple crises that include rising global inequalities, worsening environmental degradation, forced displacement, and the resurgence of authoritarian rule. For the first time in two decades, autocracies outnumber democracies, with three-quarters of the world’s population living under regimes that restrict freedoms, repress civil society, and undermine independent institutions.
The return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency adds further disruption to global health governance. U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization, abandonment of climate commitments, severe cuts to foreign aid, and rollback of pandemic preparedness measures are already having catastrophic global consequences, especially for vulnerable communities in low- and middle-income countries.
The Role of PHM: Building a Global Movement for Health
Founded in 2000 during the first People’s Health Assembly, PHM was established with the adoption of the People’s Charter for Health (PCH)—a landmark document affirming health as a fundamental human right and a political, economic, and social issue. Today, the PCH continues to guide PHM’s action and vision.
At the 5th People’s Health Assembly (PHA5) held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 2024, PHM reaffirmed its commitment through a Call to Action: “The struggle for health is a struggle for liberation and against capitalism and imperialism.” This call envisions a world rooted in dignity, equity, and Buen Vivir—where people enjoy the full right to health, decent work, and meaningful participation in shaping health and social systems, while safeguarding the health of Mother Earth.
Importantly, Amel Association International is an active member of PHM. In 2022, Amel was elected as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional representative to the PHM Steering Council, strengthening the voice of the Arab region within this global health justice movement.
