A community-based center supporting youth, children, migrant domestic workers and vulnerable communities in Greater Beirut.
What We Do?
Chiyah is located in the south-western suburbs of Beirut and forms part of Greater Beirut. It is bordered by Haret Hreik, Ghobeiry, Hadath, Hazmiyeh, Furn El Chebbak and Ain El Remmaneh.
Today, Chiyah is fully integrated into the large urban outskirts of Beirut, with around 60,000 inhabitants. Amel’s center in Chiyah responds to the needs of children, youth, migrant domestic workers and vulnerable communities through education, empowerment, livelihood and protection activities.
Education
Since 2014, the center has hosted non-formal education activities for Syrian and Lebanese children through a sponsorship programme supported by French families and ADRA.
Children benefit from tutoring in English, French and mathematics, alongside recreational activities, psychosocial support and community events.
Food Security
The center supports food security activities through practical training, community-based assistance and support to vulnerable families.
Training and food support activities help strengthen resilience among refugee and Lebanese households.
Empowerment & Livelihood
Since 2007, the center has implemented youth empowerment activities, offering technical training, life-skills training, vocational training and psychosocial support.
Around 50 youth every four months benefit from computer and English classes, conflict resolution, communication, human rights and health training, computer maintenance, graphic design, handicrafts, drawing and theater.
Migrant Domestic Workers
Since 2011, the center has hosted economic empowerment and self-development activities for migrant domestic workers and victims of human trafficking.
The Bachar Mohanna and Muslim Akil Center activities reach approximately 50 beneficiaries every Sunday.
