Executive Overview

Amel Association International is a non-governmental, non-sectarian civil society organization founded in 1979 by Dr. Kamel Mohanna. Across Lebanon, Amel provides health, education, protection, livelihood, and food security services to vulnerable populations regardless of nationality or background. Its operational footprint includes 25 community centers, 6 Mobile Medical Units (MMUs), 2 Mobile Education Units (MEUs), and 1 Mobile Protection Unit (MPU).

Sector-Specific Highlights & Key Metrics (2019)

• Health and Medical Support:

  • Operating through 14 Primary Health Care Centres (PHCCs) integrated with the Ministry of Public Health network, Amel conducted over 142,500 primary healthcare consultations.

  • Its 6 Mobile Medical Units performed 70,500 consultations targeting informal tented settlements and remote areas in the Bekaa and South Lebanon.

• Education & Child Protection:

  • Supported over 1,800 children with remedial classes, homework assistance, and psychosocial support in Haret Hreik and Ain El Remmaneh centers.

  • Reached over 19,500 individuals through child protection initiatives and parenting skills sessions.

  • Deployed 2 Mobile Education Units (“Amel Bus”) in Khiam-Marjayoun and West Bekaa (Kamed El Loz), delivering educational retention support and psychosocial care to 1,400 vulnerable children.

• Protection & Specialized Assistance:

  • Mobile Protection Unit (MPU): Reached 875 children and youth in street situations across Beirut and its suburbs, offering medical, social, and referral support.

  • Migrant Domestic Workers (MDWs): Managed 90+ legal cases, delivered skill-building courses to 1,600 participants in Chiyah, and conducted over 5,000 empowerment activities.

  • Elderly Support: Provided healthcare, chronic disease management, and psychosocial support sessions to 5,330 elderly individuals.

• Livelihood, Gender & Rural Development:

  • Reached 6,700+ youth through vocational training, language classes, IT courses, and coaching.

  • Supported 8,000+ women through micro-entrepreneurship initiatives, including the Mann Hiya handicraft project, the Ebl El Saqi artisanal soap factory, and the Menna handmade product shop and catering group.

• Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture:

  • Distributed 21,800 meals through collective kitchens in Ain El Remmaneh and Haret Hreik.

  • Trained 400 students and farmers on sustainable agriculture and prepared 300 family gardens in informal settlements across Khiam, Ersal, and El Ain in partnership with Buzuruna Juzurna.

• Human Rights & International Advocacy:

  • Amel House of Human Rights: Partnered with La Sagesse University to host its annual summer school on international law during armed conflict for ~70 regional participants.

  • Global Presence: Holds ECOSOC consultative status and operates international offices in France, Switzerland, and the USA. Co-launched the 3 Ls movement (Lebanon, Lampedusa, Lesbos) with Samusocial International to advocate for refugee rights and dignity.
