A community-based safe space empowering children, youth and families through education, psychosocial support, protection and life-skills development in one of Lebanon’s most vulnerable urban areas.
What We Do?
Through the support of international donors, the Hay el Leja Centre delivers multi-sectoral services addressing the needs of vulnerable children, especially those at risk or engaged in street work.
The center provides a holistic and child-friendly environment where children and families can access education, psychosocial support, protection services and life-skills development under one roof.
The Hay el Leja Centre stands today as a symbol of collaboration between local communities, international partners and humanitarian actors working together to create safer futures for vulnerable children across Beirut.

Education & Learning Recovery
Makani provides in-person learning, catch-up classes and educational support programmes helping vulnerable children continue their education journey.
Through the Retention Support programme, children from grades 1 to 9 receive tailored learning support, catch-up sessions and individualized recovery plans designed to bridge learning gaps and prevent school dropout.
Psychosocial Support & Protection
The center offers psychosocial support, safe recreational spaces and protection services for children affected by displacement, poverty, marginalization and social exclusion.
Activities create a secure environment where children can connect, heal, play and rebuild confidence while strengthening emotional well-being and resilience.
Digital Learning & Life Skills
Through digital hubs and internet access, children and youth benefit from educational technology, online learning opportunities and life-skills development programmes.
Activities include sports, teamwork, communication skills and youth empowerment initiatives that strengthen social inclusion and self-confidence.
Support for Families & Caregivers
Makani also supports parents and caregivers through parenting guidance, early childhood development programmes and referrals to specialized services.
This holistic family-centered approach ensures that entire households benefit from the center’s supportive and protective environment.
A Safe Space for Every Child
Makani goes beyond traditional education programmes by creating a holistic and inclusive space where vulnerable children can learn, recover, express themselves and develop social and emotional skills.
By combining education, psychosocial support, child protection and family engagement under one roof, the center contributes to preventing child labor, exploitation and school dropout while strengthening resilience within vulnerable communities.
